The Kushiro River basin has plenty of marvelous views and surreal sights to see besides the Kushiro marsh. Experiencing such beautiful scenery is one of the best thrills of sightseeing in Eastern Hokkaido.
The Tawadaira observatory is located in a vast meadow with a 360° panoramic view of the horizon. Here you can also get up close with sheep, horses, and cattle, or enjoy stargazing at night.
The Tsutsujigahara nature trail is a 2.5 kilometer path from Kawayu Onsen to Mount Io. The best time to visit is in June to July, when the white Labrador tea flowers are in full bloom.
The Otowabashi bridge is a popular spot for photographers, as you can watch and take photos of Japanese cranes from a safe distance. The beautiful birds emerging from the river mist during midwinter is a truly magical sight.
There are many observation decks where you can get a nice view of Lake Mashu, but seeing it from Mt. Mashudake is a totally different experience. You can enjoy a peaceful view of the lake, away from the noise of cars and other people. Just be prepared for a hike up the mountain.
