The Kushiro River runs for 154 km from Lake Kussharo to the Pacific Ocean. From the fountainhead to the midstream to the downstream, you’ll experience different sights and sounds in each area.

Fountainhead Course
The clear waters of Lake Kussharo will show you the flurry of fish, the red and white gravel of the riverbed, and the fallen trees that have been submerged for many years. You can also enjoy the sight of untouched, natural river springs.

Midstream Course
You will start from Lake Toro or nearby and head into the Kushiro Marsh. If you’re lucky, you may encounter some of the wild animals in the area, such as Japanese cranes, Ezo deer, or white-tailed eagles.

Downstream Course
You will start near the Hosooka Observatory and go downstream where the river gets wider and the flow is gentler. The course will take you on a ride through the vast Kushiro Marsh.
